The .SE country-specific domain extension was started in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was quite restrictive, so a very low number of domains were grabbed. Persons could secure solely one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was required, i.e. merely Swedish individuals, commercial entities and organizations were able to purchase a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized a lot and, accordingly, the number of .SE domains has been rising each year.

At this time, anybody can get a .SE domain name, which allows you to contact the Swedish WWW community even if you do not have a local presence.
